When one thinks of dive resorts the Poconos does not spring to mind, however there are some interesting dives to be had. There is the possibility to be someplace no human has ever been before. There is Harveys Lake, a once was home to a thriving resort, lumber trade, ice harvesting and steam boats. Claiming to be the largest natural lake in PA, it is about 101 feet deep now a busy summer community with alot of boat traffic so dive spring or fall for less boats and better visibility. Harveys Lake is glacial in origin and is fed by springs, Big timbers, deep silt and some big catfish in the deep trenches. Years ago Tommy O'brian the Jacques Cousteau of Harveys Lake who ran the dive shop there and probably saw most of its bottom over the decades, sank a few diving attractions, like boats about 60 yards off the beach at Sunset in about 25 feet of water which are cool to check out. Local legend has it that a team of horses and a carriage went through the ice long ago and was never seen again. Neither Tommy or any other diver has reported ever seeing them. There are lots of old (and new) bottles in the lakes as well, so wear gloves if you plan on rooting around in the silt. Lake Winola, West of Scranton is glacial at about 38 feet in depth. An obsidian spear point(native to southwestern us) about 8 inches long was once reported found there by a diver. Lake Wallenpaupack is a man made lake and is quite large. It is in the Northern Poconos near Hawley. Most of the lakes get pretty dark after 35 feet, so if you are going deep, have some kick ass lights and a thermos of something warm in the boat. There are many swimming holes in the creeks that have native trout to check out...not a big dive but cool to check out if your tanks in the car. The Susquehanna is on the dirty side for diving south of Pittston, where a mine tunnel belches whatever into the river on a regular basis, but above Harding the river gets clean. South of the Poconos in the Bethlehem-Kutztown area are Willow Springs and Dutch Springs, sunken quarries - now dive attractions with all kinds of sunken stuff to check out. You can stir up some silt so keep a close eye on your buddy any place in PA. For Air and Gear |
